The main objectives of this workshop co-organized by JOLISAA were:
This highly participatory event was attended by about 100 participants from EU and Africa, from research, policy and practice. A specific session allowed intensive interactions with farmers-innovators during the East African Farmer Innovator Fair. A synthesis of the main conclusions, as well as e-proceedings can be downloaded on the workshop site.
IN cluding S mallholders in A gricultural R esearch for D evelopment is a 3-year EU-funded project (2011–13) that seeks to make it easier for civil-society organisations (CSOs) – both non-governmental organisations and farmer organisations – to be actively involved in influencing agricultural research for development (ARD) in Africa. It is designing a mechanism that allows CSOs to participate effectively in regional and international discussions on ARD, linking European and African CSOs that are trying to influence ARD policy and practice, and working with African and European research organisations to strengthen demand-driven ARD. JOLISAA collaborates with INSARD in these policy-dialogue activities.

The P latform for A frican-E uropean P artnership in A gricultural R esearch for D evelopment promotes research collaboration between a wide range of organisations in Africa and Europe. It facilitates partnerships between farmer organisations (FOs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs), research institutes and educational institutes, private companies and policy networks through capacity strengthening and providing access to information on funding opportunities. It helps partners prepare strong research proposals to address real needs at the farm level. It advocates for increased support for demand-led, multi-actor agricultural research. PAEPARD is coordinated by the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) and Agrinatura, a consortium of research and educational organisations in Europe. In it is work with FOs and NGOs, it collaborates with INSARD (www.repaoc.org/insard). The PAEPARD initiative is supported by the European Union through its Food Security Thematic Programme. Up-to-date information on ARD in Africa is provided via the PAEPARD blogspot (http://paepard.blogspot.com).
Prolinnova (Pro moting L ocal Innova tion) is an NGO-initiated international network of diverse stakeholders seeking to promote local innovation in ecologically oriented agriculture and natural resource management. It focuses on recognising the dynamics of indigenous knowledge and enhancing farmers’ capacities to adjust to change – to develop their own site-appropriate systems and institutions of resource management. Prolinnova partners build on and scale up farmer-led approaches to sustainable development that start with finding out how small-scale farmers do informal experiments to develop and test new ideas for better use of natural resources. Understanding the rationale behind local innovation transforms how research and extension agents view local people. This experience stimulates interest on both sides to enter into joint action. JOLISAA collaborates with the Prolinnova networks in Kenya and South Africa.
